A bill making its way through the California legislature would require reports from data centers to be public. The bill recently passed both chambers and should soon go to the governor.

If it becomes law, the bill will require the “owner or operator of the data center” to provide data on energy consumption, electricity generation and sound levels to the state energy commission.

“A single data center can consume as much electricity as an entire city, yet California doesn’t track how many exist, where they’re located, or how much energy they actually use,” bill sponsor Assemblyman Rebecca Bauer-Kahan wrote in a Facebook post. “This will allow California to plan infrastructure, evaluate efficiency, and protect ratepayers from bearing unfair costs.”
