Brechner FOI Project seeks Sunshine Week contractor

The Joseph L. Brechner Freedom of Information Project at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications seeks a part-time contractor working remote to help coordinate national Sunshine Week in March 2027 and the Sunshine Fest conference in Washington, D.C. Contractors in the Washington, D.C., area are preferred, but we will accept other proposals from outside of the area.

Applicants should have at least a bachelor’s degree and six years of relevant experience, particularly in freedom of information, event planning, and public communications through writing and multimedia. The contract requires attention to detail, initiative, accuracy, email responsiveness, ability to meet deadlines, skill in juggling tasks, and knowledge and passion for freedom of information.

The contract is for $3,000 per month for up to one year, potentially renewable. It does not include medical, vacation or retirement benefits. Duties for the contract include:

  • Coordinate national Sunshine Week
    • Add partners to the partner page (monitor input form and upload logos).
    • Monitor news stories regarding Sunshine Week and post to the news stories page.
    • Find four FOI champions, interview them and write features for Feb. 1, 2027, posting.
    • Solicit editorial cartoons, columns and other content regarding FOI, and post in the Content for Publication page.
    • Promote through social media weekly throughout the year, and by reaching out to relevant groups to include in their communications.
    • Collect events/activities from groups and post to the activity list/calendar.
  • Assist in the 2027 Sunshine Fest conference (March or September)
    • Assist on site in Washington, D.C., travel paid for, including printing and putting up signage, room monitoring, ensuring supplies are delivered, on hand to put out fires, etc.
    • Print out name badges ahead of time and prepare with sleeves; print out corrections and new badges on site.
    • Promotions and outreach to groups for registration.
    • Assist in programming and speaker management.
    • Take candid photos and video and post to social media during the conference and to a webpage for attendees following the conference.
    • Design signs and a program; have printed and delivered.
    • Research and recommend conference app options (e.g., Whova, Guidebook).
  • Assist in public communications
    • Post to Brechner and Sunshine Week social media accounts at least twice per week (e.g., Tuesdays and Thursdays).
    • Write FOI news stories for the Brechner news posts, one per week.
    • Assist in producing news items for the monthly Brechner Report email newsletter.
