Study: Researchers call for universities to proactively publish research misconduct records

Universities should proactively post records of research misconduct investigations on their websites to strengthen trust in academic science, argue Ivan Oransky and Adam Marcus in a recent paper published in the Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics.

The authors highlight cases where excessive secrecy has shielded misconduct, like falsified data or flawed studies, from public scrutiny. They note that in some countries, including Japan, institutions are required to publicly release details of misconduct investigations to ensure accountability.

Oransky and Marcus urge universities in the U.S. and elsewhere to adopt similar transparency practices voluntarily, suggesting that open reporting would help uphold research integrity and maintain public confidence in science.
